A church that seems to be blind to its effect on the neighborhood around it. I got kind of nervous when it first came to the neighborhood & I saw "mission" on its vans and signs - "mission" usually means someone who's fanatical about their cause. And despite the worthiness of helping gay youth, the solution doesn't have to insist on Christianity. Christianity is the mission; with gay youth as the thing that's meant to elicit public sympathy for the cause. I have lots of sympathy for the cause but don't like this church's methods. The church that used to be in the same space was respectful of the neighborhood, with a congregation that parked on the dirt around the church so as not to take all the parking spaces in the neighborhood - very nice people

But Mission Gathering is much more than a church - the people who run it seem to be on an ego trip; as each week there are more & more events there (whether they're making money from renting the space or not; it still adds to their "cachet" for them to do all these things, to them, I guess). The church doesn't seem to be aware it's smack in the middle of a residential area, or to tell any of the people coming to all the events.

Along with weddings and normal church activities, the church hosts shows for one of the rock radio stations, the Irenic, and School of Rock. Just saw that four shows are scheduled for this week alone, and they also have bands coming in to rehearse before shows, & a big, noisy generator often parked outside. Wish I could afford to move! We're talking about a LOT of noise, even more people crowding into an overcrowded area, more trash, & less parking spaces in an area where that's already an issue. I have working class, single female neighbors who come home at night & can't find parking because of the church. The noise starts before the shows, can be unbearably loud during the shows, & then goes on for up to another two hours of drunken kids & others who don't seem to get it that they're in a residential neighborhood as they continue to party, yell, & slam car doors up & down the street. In hot weather or when we just want air, we have to shut our windows & turn on music & fans whether we want to play music or not; just to shut out the worst of the noise.

If it wants to host all these events, the church is in the wrong place. I'm sick of the idea that North Park is either fair game 'cause it's so full of upscale excitement or 'cause it's one of the areas where San Diego's always swept whatever it doesn't want to deal with (lots of homeless people, drug addicts, & prostitutes).

This a residential neighborhood, not downtown or even 30th St I'm close to homeless (working poor) & struggle to get any work done with all the freakin' noise. Church members and show-goers sometimes seem nice enough - others are rude & inconsiderate as heck before/after whatever. There are still lots of working poor & working class in this neighborhood & I hear more & more people slamming windows down, yelling out their windows, & having arguments with all the drunks & other inconsiderate people on the street - like hell, at worst, & the Missiongathering is doing its part to get us there faster. Ironic.

This might have worked in North Park 20 years ago, even though it was much more working class then, just 'cause it wasn't so overrun with people, noise, events, traffic. It doesn't work now. Many of us would like to say goodbye to the church & all its 'events.'

  • I am a senior citizen, who has longed to find a church with a diversity of ages, races, beliefs, genders, and even sexual orientations - a church reflecting urban America as it is. The welcome I receive from those young Christians, their music and their inclusion of all, from seasoned believers to agnostics and atheists -these are a tonic to me. I am grateful to have found this community and family.

  • I've been offering yoga classes to their at-risk, transition age youth on Tuesday evenings. Their 8 West Project and Urban Street Angel staff is second to none. They are dedicated, kind and resourceful; I'm so honored to support such an incredible team of talented people. This church and its programs are a major blessing to countless folks. Sincerely, Kat Katsanis-Semel, M.A.

  • I drive down from LA every week to attend Missiongathering. The people are wonderful and the mission of the church is all about extending love to everyone without compromise. If you are looking for a church where you will be welcomed, accepted, and loved MG is one worth checking out.

This church is just like all the rest, it's all about money and LOTS OF IT so the leaders can live like royal queens. I recently lost my life partner and inquired about a memorial service. I spoke to the head pastor and the first thing he asked me about was how much money I had to spend, I responded that I wasn't rich or poor just middle class. He then cut off the conversation and told me to contact his assistant pastor. I called the assistant pastor and left a very detailed message and after 2 weeks he never returned my call. After all the grief I've been through from my loss this church has stooped as low as it can get, having the nerve to advertise as the church of love, "love wins" , what a pathetic joke.
