  • Nearly a decade flew by, and I still had the ashes of my mother, husband and two dogs in boxes in my bedroom. I didn’t know what to do, and couldn’t bear the thought of letting them all go, but I realized it simply had to be done. After much angst about how and where to release the ashes, I called San Diego Burials at Sea. They were extremely knowledgeable, professional and quite sensitive to my situation.

Convinced that letting go of the earthly ashes by scattering them at sea was the answer, I gathered a small group of close friends and chartered the yacht. I brought the four boxes on board, along with plenty of champagne. The captain and the yacht host could not have been nicer, or more understanding.

While heading out of San Diego Bay to the open ocean, I shared stories of my mother Mercedes, husband Dave, and our beloved dogs Sammy and Jessie. We all cried … and laughed. I had recorded music that was meaningful to me, and the captain played it so that we could hear it out on the bow, while the host made sure we were all comfortable.

When the time came, the captain positioned the yacht so that it faced the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado and the San Diego skyline. What was amazing to me is that the host prepared the ashes in an urn – each individually – mixed with rose petals. I gave a short eulogy for each loved one, and we all toasted with our champagne. The host went back inside the boat to prepare the next ashes for scattering, giving us time to reflect in between each one.

It is difficult to explain how beautiful it is when the ashes and rose petals disperse into the ocean. They leave a beautiful trail that slowly becomes part of the water. What followed was an amazing emotional release, and even relief. They were free! And the best part was, that now, every time I look out to the ocean I think of them all. And I smile. It was truly an amazing experience.

  • We were from out of town and came back after 32 years to our home city to send my dads ashes into the sea. We were able to find San Diego Burial at Sea and without any notice they found us a captain and a host to take us out that day. Tawanna was so helpful and kind over the phone. Our ceremony was expertly handled, it was very small but our hostess Jane entered in the right moments - gave us space when needed - she was perfect. Captain Paul took us to a sheltered spot and made sure that there was no interference with waves or other shipping traffic. The preparations they handled was seamlessly with efficiency and a lot of care. I would strongly recommend them to anyone for any occasion - as you will be treated fairly, with respect, and very nice accommodations. Thanks to everyone who helped transition our father to a beautiful place.

  • The team at San Diego Burial at Sea was amazing from the first call I made to Tawanna to the experience on the charter with the team. It was a tough day for me and my family as we scattered my Mom's ashes, but the staff really made us feel at ease. They were very empathetic and nice.

The charter was beautiful and clean and the captain took us out past Point Loma where we had the backdrop of the Hotel del Coronado. It could not have been prettier. After reading some poems and sharing some thoughts we dispersed the ashes into the sea. And the way the ashes are placed in an urn with rose petals made for a very beautiful spreading of the ashes.

The staff was so friendly and really helped to keep things light with some humor mixed in so that once we got back to the dock we were in good spirits.

All in all it was an exceptional experience. It is one of the hardest days we ever have to go through, however San Diego Burial at Sea made it as happy of a memory that we could ask for. I without a doubt recommend them to anyone in need of their services.

  • From the point of first contact over the phone to the final de-boarding, my family and I all had a sense of gratefulness and peace. Our captain and hostess were excellent. We felt welcomed and comforted over the loss of my mother. The shells provided by which we placed notes in and the scattering of the ashes with the rose petals was so beautiful. The intimacy with the family as we traveled across the water listening to music we had selected was such a time of peace and serenity. As we gathered thoughts and memories for our final goodbyes, we experienced a special comfort upon scattering my mom's ashes. Traveling back to the dock was a time of relaxation and wonderful memories. Thank you to all of you at San Diego Burial at Sea for providing us comfort, empathy and a very special experience that will always be cherished and remembered.
